FBI fugitive featured in PSN ad nabbed in California
FBI fugitive and purported Boston organized crime boss James "Whitey" Bulger, 81, and his reported accomplice, Catherine Elizabeth Greig, 60, were arrested in Santa Monica, Calif., on June 22 after more than 15 years on the run. The arrests came quickly on the heels of a renewed FBI effort to locate the pair.
Bulger, who fled Boston in 1994 and was on the FBI's 10 Most Wanted List, and Greig were featured in a full-page advertisement purchased by the FBI that appeared on page 3 of PSN's April-May 2010 issue. The agency also had purchased advertising in other medical trade publications in an effort to locate the pair.
The arrests, which came at a Santa Monica residence, came after the FBI launched a media campaign in 14 major U.S. cities, according to the online latimes.com. The pair were taken into custody without incident, according to news reports. The FBI had focused recent its recent public outreach efforts on Greig in an attempt to catch Bulger.
Bulger served as the model for a character played by Jack Nicholson in "The Departed," a 2006 film directed by Martin Scorsese. He reportedly has been linked to 19 killings, as well as racketeering and other crimes reaching back into the 1970s, the newspaper reported.
The pair were schedule to appear in federal court in Los Angeles on June 24.
