Past PSF President Mary McGrath, MD, gains ACS Distinguished Service Award
PSF past President Mary McGrath, MD, San Francisco, has been named recipient of the American College of Surgeon's 2011 Distinguished Service Award.
A professor of surgery in the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of California-San Francisco, Dr. McGrath has held leadership positions with the ACS, including First Vice-President, as well as with the National Endowment for Plastic Surgery and the Plastic Surgery Research Council, among other organizations.
"I'm honored to be recognized for the projects on which I've worked at the College," Dr. McGrath tells PSNExtra. "While always being mindful of representing plastic surgery, working with the College has been a chance to collaborate with thoughtful surgeons from every specialty and to use the rich resources of the ACS to accomplish our goals.
"Whether wrestling with how to incorporate new technology, or to be heard in Washington and the state capitols, or how to bring about widescale improvements in patient safety, the projects have been big and meaningful," she adds. "I'm grateful I've been able to contribute - and touched that colleagues at the College consider what I'm doing worthwhile."
Dr. McGrath is a past chair of the ASPS Board of Trustees, and she has been an FDA General and Plastic Surgery Devices Panel member and agency consultant for more than 20 years. She was appointed to The Joint Commission's (formerly The Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations) Board of Commissioners in 2009. and she serves as a member of the Plastic Surgery Residency Review Committee and on National Institutes of Health review panels.
