On Feb 16, Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen G. Sebelius announced that HHS will initiate the process to postpone the Oct. 1, 2013 compliance deadline for implementation of International Classification of Diseases, 10th Edition diagnosis and procedure codes (ICD-10-CM/PCS).

The statement did not include an indication of a new deadline.

HHS's announcement followed comments from CMS acting administrator Marilyn Tavenner indicating that CMS would "re-examine the pace" of the ICD-10 implementation. ASPS has supported efforts by the American Medical Association to halt the ICD-10 implementation and will continue to monitor and update members on this issue.
